The Muffs - I Need You. Sub Pop 7". SP157.

I've had this one lined up for ages but overlooked it in favour of other, more esoteric, angry, or rare releases.  More fool me, this is a superb slab of girl-crazy pop punk. The Muffs seemed to be one of those bands who, if one of those bands was going to break through, would be that band. For whatever reason it didn't happen. It was, however, a huge kick to hear their version of Kim Wilde's Kids In America light up the opening credits of 1995 hit movie, Clueless.
The flipside to this is a great cover of Beat Your Heart Out by The Zeros ("The Mexican Buzzcocks"). Enjoy.

Boris The Sprinkler - Grilled Cheese. Bulge Records 7". Bulge 1.

Daft arse, madcap punk from Green Bay, Wisconsin. Frontman The Rev. Norb used to have a column in Maximum Rock and Roll and his taste for the SF Budget Rock sound chimed well with that scene's love of the cheap and theatrical. Such as The Rezillos, whose Bad Guy Reaction is covered on the flipside of this first release. It sounds like the kind of record that would be released by the kind of band who would wear glasses to make them look like a fake 'new wave' band on CHiPs. In a good way. Enjoy.

Bassholes - John Henry. Sympathy For The Record Industry 7". SFTRI 175.

It wasn't until I spoke to Don Howland that I found out it's Bassholes as in assholes not Bassholes as in bass guitar. And I'd been getting it wrong for all that time. The version of John Henry on this is completely different to the one on the Haunted Hill LP. Enjoy.

The Queers - Too Dumb To Quit. Selfless Records EP. Selfless 27.

Straight outta Portsmouth, New Hampshire, it's the questionably named ("Supposedly, the name 'Queers' was used simply to poke fun at what he called the "Art Fag" community in New Hampshire," says their wiki) Queers. It's the usual brand of dumb-ass, play it loud with a smile on your face pop punk you'd associate with a band strongly associated with Sell Out, ooops, Lookout! Records (had a Maximum Rocknroll flashback moment there, sorry). Enjoy.

Boris The Sprinkler - Drugs & Masturbation. Mutant Pop 7".

I am, to be honest, not posting much here as I have nothing to say. I don't want to tell you about Boris The Sprinkler and The Reverend Norb, a man who once sent me a t-shirt in a size which could have made a perfectly good wedding dress for a blue whale. A t-shirt I never wore once, despite anticipating the fun I could have with Boris the Sprinkler Throws Like A Girl splattered across my chest at the Spare Rib Reunion Disco. So I won't.

Bum - Mrs. Rock'n'Roll. One Louder Records Loud 2.

I've only got this as a promo copy and a quick trawl of the net reveals nothing beyond the sad news that the last update on the Bum fansite was in August 2001. So, Bum. Canadian, power pop and seemed to have an affinity with Japan as they released split singles with both Teengenerate and Fifi and The Mach Three. The former will appear here. Eventually.
