Billy Childish's fourth 'proper band' (preceded by Pop Rivits, Milkshakes, Mighty Caesars) and possibly his most prolific. It was certainly a busy time for the Medway-based Renaissance man with singles being released at wallet-sapping speed from all four corners of the globe. According to their Wiki page, this was their fifth LP release out of around 26. Grunnen Rocks makes it Long Player number four. Not that any of it matters, of course. This was the band's first release on the Sub Pop label and there was even a la-di-da video made for Girl of Matches (actually, it was appropriately-low budget), alongside this specially-commissioned Daniel Clowes cover. It's Billy and the boys at their garage rock finest. This one is for Anonymous. Enjoy. (Oh, and if anybody cares to share the awful dance record made by Steve Fisk which either featured or sampled Mr. Childish please get in touch. I've not heard it since it permanently split my sides one painful day in Eastern Bloc records).

A bit of Billy as we've not had any for a while now. This is one that survived The Great Fund-raising Billy Cull of several years back due to two things; the picture on the sleeve - beer crates, mid-air Caesars and Napalm Death t-shirts, how incongruous can you get? - and the quality of the material contained within said sleeve. It's difficult to argue against the opinion that Thee Mighty Caesars were it where Billy Childish bands are concerned. The die was cast with this band, everything that came after was a retread (Thee Headcoats) or inferior (the 'British Empire' band). Not to say that what came after wasn't worth listening to, more that this feels like a peak. Turn it up. Jump and down. Enjoy.

Well, oops. It wasn't meant to be such a long time between updates. Things got a bit bogged down when I decided to run Mad Mummies March. That didn't happen but my head was turned by Mad Mummies May. Which also didn't happen, but I have at least now digitised all my Mummies vinyl. In celebration here's the legendary Fuck C.D.s! It's ... The Mummies on Wild Billy Childish's old Hangman label. This is proper budget rock as it's essentially Never Been Caught with three fewer tracks. Stirling marketing, there, Billy. Nice one.
Anyhow, you know how this sounds. It's The Mummies. There may be differences in the mastering between this and the Telstar-released LP, but how would I know. I'm just a tone deaf lunk who loves the sound of amateur hour. There will be more. Enjoy.

Last minute decision to upload this before midnight. It's 23:57 and I just finished encoding it. Enjoy.

What a lovely object, eh? After Hangman Records went west following distributor problems Billy Childish started Hangman's Daughter. This instrumental gem from Cee Bee Beaumont was an early release. C.B. Beaumont was a character in Ray Dennis Steckler's movie Rat Fink A Boo Boo. And that's it. Enjoy.

I've not heard everything - particularly material from the past ten years - but this has to be far and away my favourite Billy Childish-related seven-incher. And that's just for the title track as I'm struggling to remember what the flip side sounds like. Enjoy.

It sometimes appears that there are as many Billy Childish-related seven-inch singles as there are stars in the sky. I used to own a small solar system's worth, but sold them when I realised that they all sound roughly the same. Apart from the really good ones, that is. Like Girl From '62. That's a good one. A really good one. This one is okay, and shows Hampshire's love for The Goons to full effect.

No self-respecting garage-focussed site would be complete with out a little childishness here and there. So, here's the first bit from these quarters. I got rid of a lot of rare Childish material a few years back but, regretably, did not keep digital copies. That said, I still have more of his stuff hanging around the house than I ever would of The Arcade Fire, Sigur Ros, or whatever other trendy bunch of mother-bangers have replaced Dark Side of the Moon in the car stereo of the urban cool cat.

This is said to contain 'four rare tracks' and is sourced from three different recording sessions, but this is Billy 'Billions of Versions' Childish and I'm damned if I'm going to even attempt to mine backwards to discover where, or if, these songs were previously issued.  It's good, it's raw, it's The Milkshakes. Enjoy.
