I have no idea what Greg Lowery was thinking when he released this mix of early out-of-print material and unreleased cuts from Captain 9's. The sound at times resembles 80s shambling bands, at other times, badly-recorded amateurish punk. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't. The record itself is too schizophrenic to hold together as a coherent twelve-incher. This one is for industrialnorth. Enjoy.

The Mummies - Tales From The Crypt (Bootleg LP).

As promised last August (!)  here's Tales From The Crypt, the vinyl bootleg of The Mummies' recording sessions with Mike Mariconda which were meant to make up the band’s debut LP (to be released on Crypt). The story is that The Mummies had wanted Billy Childish to produce but when that proved impossible, for unknown reasons, label boss Tim Warren sent his friend, Mariconda (ex of The Raunch Hands). This didn’t go down well with the band and they weren’t happy with the results. Neither, it seems, was Tim Warren, as he shelved the tapes.

Eventually they leaked. Initially on the Fuck The Mummies CD (a Long Gone John project from which the band never saw any cash) and on this vinyl release (an unofficial Get Hip release from which they did pick up some cash). There’s no doubt that Never Been Caught made a much better debut than this would have done; this is too clean, but it is definitely worth listening to. If there’s enough interest in this, I’ll call a Mad Mummies March event and upload some more of their stuff.

We've not had an insert-heavy upload for a while and I don't remember previously uploading a double seven inch set (please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) so here's a release that does both. This comes as a seven-inch-sized comic book with two records included. A bit like those old Power Records sets. I know nothing about The Wolfmen. Grunnen Rocks lists them as being from the USA with only one other release; a 7" on Dionysus. Of The Mummies, I know that this is about as 'produced' as The Mummies ever got. These two tracks have no production credit but a quick comparison with the Tales From The Crypt bootleg clearly indicates that they come from the Mike Mariconda-produced sessions for the aborted Crypt LP. For both parties take on that I recommend a read of Eric Davidson's We Never Learn. I'll upload Tales From The Crypt in the near future. Well, oops. It wasn't meant to be such a long time between updates. Things got a bit bogged down when I decided to run Mad Mummies March. That didn't happen but my head was turned by Mad Mummies May. Which also didn't happen, but I have at least now digitised all my Mummies vinyl. In celebration here's the legendary Fuck C.D.s! It's ... The Mummies on Wild Billy Childish's old Hangman label. This is proper budget rock as it's essentially Never Been Caught with three fewer tracks. Stirling marketing, there, Billy. Nice one.
Anyhow, you know how this sounds. It's The Mummies. There may be differences in the mastering between this and the Telstar-released LP, but how would I know. I'm just a tone deaf lunk who loves the sound of amateur hour. There will be more. Enjoy.

The Car Thieves inferior release on Radio X. Just plain excellent garage and trash here. Their stupendously good surf single on Planet Pimp sounds like it was recorded by a different band. Enjoy.

Planet Pimp, and its genius CEO Sven Erik Geddes, managed to out-do even the casual, don't care, ennui of The Mummies by unleashing this classic piece of exploitation. Releasing a record by the Kings of Budget Rock? Take it down a step by releasing poorly-recorded live tracks in a glued-together DIY sleeve.

The Spoiled Brats - Rich Kid. Real Records. Real 103.

The Spoiled Brats were yet another amalgamation from the limited gene pool that coughed up most of the budget rock / garage scene in the early 1990s. So, here we have Elka Zolot fresh from or on her way to The Trashwomen, The Count Backwurds and The Spastics, alongside Shane White whose career could only head down after The Fingers split up. In the meantime he pouted meanly on behalf of The Rip-Offs, The Infections, The Tight Fits, The Loose Lips and The Bearded Tits. This is a great single, managing to get that shitty Brentwoods vocal sound nailed to the meatiness of The Rip-Offs. It came free with Sooprize Package magazine which was run by a great fella down on the south coast whose name I have, rather embarassingly, forgotten. So, sorry Tarquin Lunchbox, or whatever your name was, but thanks for the finest of the two singles (not including the MRR split) that The Spoiled Brats put out. And I hope that when you put 'Laundrymat Brat' as the flip you were just following orders.

Supercharger - Sooprize Package for Mr. Mineo. Super*Teem 4501.

Ah, Supercharger. How many ways do I love you? This single was issued on Darin Rafaelli's own Super*Teem records after the band had split up. It is in no way essential Supercharger. Main track, Sooprize Package for Mr. Mineo comes from Supercharger's self-titled debut LP, but is more famous (ha ha) for having been covered by The Mummies for Fuck CDs, It's The Mummies on Hangman and Never Been Caught on Telstar. The b-side is South City Psycho and this appears to be the only time it was released. Which is understandable as it is very much minor Supercharger.

For my good friend Anonymous, who liked Melons on Melrose so much he (or she, but much more likely to be he based on years of scientific research and analysis into this sort of thing by me and the rest of the scientific community) became this blog's very own Oliver Twist by asking for more. More Fingers. Ouch! And here it is.  My first Fingers single. The one that ruined me for all other garage bands.

The Brentwoods - Fun In South City. Radio X LP. RX-05.

A full LP for a change, and one of the most sought-after rarities of the Budget Rock scene. Following the acrimonious split-up of Supercharger, Greg Lowery started The Rip-Offs with the White brothers, Jason and Shane, and drummer Jon Von and Darin Rafaelli and Karen Singletary kick-started The Brentwoods with the mysterious Patty on vocals and Danielle Pimm of The Trashwomen on bass. Somewhere along the line Dr. Pat Phelan late of The Saturn V featuring Orbit joined in, but details of who played what, where and when is lost to known civilisation.  Click on the image of the front cover to read the story of Colonel Brain's ruckus with 'The Riff-Raffs'.

It's an acquired taste and very much the logical end-point of the Supercharger sound. The Brentwoods are to Supercharger as Loli and The Chones would be to The Rip-Offs; sonic extremes.  Anyhow, if you like badly-recorded, badly-played, badly-sung, immature shite then this is the record for you.
